One Bad Crab

Monday, September 8th 5:30pm Casino

Dear WCC Members,

Mark your calendars for a special event Monday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 in the Casino.

WCC members and your guests are invited to the screening and discussion of One Bad Crab, a provocative film about the invasive green crab. The director, Sandy Cannon-Brown, will lead the discussion.

The Latin name for the European green crab is Carcinus maenas, which translates as “raving mad crab” and gives some insight into the personality of an invasive crustacean with a voracious and wide-ranging appetite that undermines valuable commercial and recreational shellfish resources wherever it appears. What can we make of its presence in Martha’s Vineyard’s bays and ponds, and what can we do about it?  Cannon-Brown's curiosity about the green crab was inspired by an article of the same name by Nelson Sigelman in Martha's Vineyard Magazine.

Cannon-Brown is an award-winning environmental filmmaker whose work has taken her throughout New England and the Chesapeake Bay, and to Central and South America, West Africa, the Northern Great Plains of Montana, and the Everglades. Before moving to Martha's Vineyard in 2020, she lived in St. Michaels, MD and made 9 critically acclaimed films about subjects important to the Chesapeake Bay.  One Bad Crab is her first film focusing on New England.

Thank you!

Justin
